Comparing Products? Price Isn't Everything...

Be Aware of Hidden Charges when Comparing Products

When getting a quote be aware of hidden charges that may exist. You may end up paying a lot more than you thought you would.

  1. Is the Plan maximum more than $2 million?

  2. Are there any administrative fees?

  3. Will I get a full refund for all unused days if I return early?

  4. Am I covered if I get COVID-19?

 

1. Is the Plan maximum MORE than $2 million?

In 2022 there was a claim that was more than $2 million. The medical inflation rate in the US is 10-14% so it is likely there will be more claims that exceed $2 million. Some companies charge extra to provide more than $2 million of coverage.

All TIO products include at least $5 million of coverage.

 

2. Are there any Administrative Fees?

Some companies have administrative fees ranging from $10 to $50 for cancelling, changing dates, extending coverage, and refunds. Some do not give refunds unless you provide a doctor’s note proving you are cancelling for medical reasons. Getting a doctor’s note is inconvenient and can cost you $25-$150.

Some companies may not give refunds if you return earlier than planned. There may be limitations on how many days are refunded and you may also incur an administrative fee. You could lose hundreds of dollars. These companies expect you to give them your travel dates when you apply for coverage, often months before your trip, and then penalize you if your plans change.

4. Am I covered if I get COVID-19?

Most companies include coverage for COVID-19 but some companies charge an additional premium for the coverage. Some companies only include coverage if you have been vaccinated. Some companies do not cover COVID-19 if a travel advisory is in effect.
